Italians land € 100 million desalination plant in Iran
WTD, based in Pomezia, Italy, clinched a € 100 million deal in August to construct a desalination unit in Asalouyeh, near the South Pars gas field. The contract is for Iran’s Damavand Petrochemical Company.

Germany’s inge watertechnologies AG will equip the Hongyanhe nuclear power plant near Dalian in the east of China with its dizzer 5000plus ultrafiltration (UF) modules, each rated for an output of up to 5.0 m³/h each.

First MOT plant produces water in Gibraltar
The first desalination plant to employ Manipulated Osmotic Technology (MOT) has produced its first water in Gibraltar. Modern Water, the UK company that installed the plant, also announced on 15 September that it has an agreement to install another MOT plant in Oman.

Wabag India has been awarded a € 20+ million contract for the planning and completion of a comprehensive turnkey plant water system, including a wastewater treatment plant as part of the expansion of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd power plant in Vizag, India.

Kuwait’s 136,000 m³/d Shuwaikh plant awarded to Doosan
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction won the contract in September for the 136,000 m³/d (36 MGD) Shuwaikh Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Plant, the first in the country to use SWRO. Simultaneously, Doosan awarded the energy-recovery contract to Energy Recovery Inc (ERI).

Singapore International Water Week is calling for nominations for the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2009, which recognises outstanding contributions towards solving global water problems through applying groundbreaking technologies or implementing innovative policies and programmes which benefit humanity.

An environmental impact assessment (EIA) was filed in early September by Minera Escondida, operated by BHP Billiton, for its project Supplementary Desalinated Water Supply for Minera Escondida in Chile.

United International Bank BSC, an investment bank headquartered in Bahrain, announced at the end of September 2008 its acquisition of the UK-based BWA Water Additives, a leading water treatment solution provider from Close Brothers Private Equity Ltd.
