ERI appoints Dyer as CTO
Energy Recovery Inc (ERI) has appointed Tim Dyer as chief technology officer (CTO) to replace Rick Stover, who left ERI in January to join forward-osmosis company Oasys. Previously ERI chief scientist, Dyer will manage all engineering and R&D initiatives.

Twelve projects announced at Australian desalination centre opening
A project to apply wave energy to seawater desalination was one of 12 projects to receive awards from Australia’s National Centre of Excellence in Desalination (NCED) and announced at the centre’s opening on 23 July 2010.

Revised dates for IDA desalination energy conference
The International Desalination Association (IDA) has rescheduled its conference on Desalination: An Energy Solution, which was to have taken place in California in September, to 2-3 November 2010 at the same venue, the Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa, Huntington Beach.

Indians providing MBR wastewater treatment in Africa
Indian water technology provider Shivsu Canadian Clear International Ltd has won orders worth US$ 6 million from private organizations and governments in Africa to set up membrane-based industrial wastewater treatment plants in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

Singapore funds more desalination research
Desalination membrane improvements and a combined heating, cooling and desalination system are among six research proposals granted about Sing$ 1 million (US$ 710,000) in research funding on 30 June 2010 by Singapore’s Environment & Water Industry Programme Office (EWI).

IDE wins Chinese follow-on order for four MED desalination plants
Four additional multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination units, each with a production capacity of 25,000 m³/day of distilled water, are to be supplied for Tianjin SDIC, China’s new electricity- generation megaplant, by IDE Technologies of Israel.

Sembcorp to develop SWRO desalination plant in Abu Dhabi
Singapore’s Sembcorp Utilities has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) in the UAE to develop and build a new seawater reverse-osmosis (SWRO) desalination facility with potable water production capacity of around 30 MIGD (136,000 m³/d).

Siemens working on MBR system and low-energy desalination
Siemens may launch a new membrane bioreactor (MBR) based wastewater treatment and reuse system in 2011. It will also be delivering a demonstration low-energy desalination unit to Singapore’s Environment & Water Industry Development Council (EWI) by the end of the year.

Modern Water desalination trial in Oman extended
Modern Water plc announced on 23 June 2010 that it had agreed an extension to the trial of its desalination plant with the Omani Public Authority for Electricity & Water. Modern Water has agreed a tariff to continue to provide water to the local community for a further six-month term.
