Peru to step up investment in potable water projects

Peru is to step up investment in potable water and sanitation projects in the coming year, reports BN Americas.

President Pedro Pablo Kucynski wants to invest PEN 4,200 billion ($1.3 billion) in water projects this year. Additionally, the government will transfer PEN 440 million ($136 million) to 47 bankrupt municipal water companies.

The plans were outlined by housing and construction minister Edmer Trujillo at World Water Week in Stockholm, 28 August to 1 September 2017.

Trujillo confirmed that the Provisur project for a desalination plant and wastewater treatment works on the outskirts of capital city Lima is to start on site in October. The two-year project will service 100,000 people.

A further $3 billion is to be spent on public-private partnership (PPP) projects for wastewater treatment and sanitation works, as part of Kuczynski’s ambition to extend potable water and sanitation services to the whole of Peru.
