ERI to supply Hyflux project in Algeria
The Souk Tleta seawater reverse-osmosis desalination plant in Tlemcen in north-western Algeria, is to be supplied by Energy Recovery Inc (ERI) with 269 PX-220 energy recovery devices.

Privatization advisor contracts signed by SWCC
The contracts for advisors to the programme to privatize the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) in Saudi Arabia were signed on 29 November 2008 in a ceremony attended by the Minister of Water & Electricity, HH Eng Abdullah Alhusayyen, who is chairman of the SWCC board, and the SWCC governor, Fehaid Al-Shareef.

Doosan awarded latest Jeddah contract
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction signed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the third stage of the Jeddah desalination plan in Saudi Arabia on 1 December 2008.

Changi NEWater Phase 1 RO delivered in 7 months
The first phase (40%) of the reverse-osmosis (RO) trains for Singapore’s Changi NEWater treatment plant have been delivered within 7 months into the contract, sub-contractor Biwater announced on 5 December 2008.

Befesa ties up Tenes project finance
Madrid-based contractor Befesa, through its subsidiary Befesa Agua, announced on 1 December 2008 closure of the US$ 185 million financing for the design, construction, funding and 25-year operation of the Tenes seawater desalination plant in Algeria.

Australian government to fund desalination projects
Guidelines for the Australian government’s plan to fund large-scale infrastructure projects, including desalination, to help cities and towns meet future demand for water were published on 7 December 2008 by the Treasurer, Wayne Swan, and the Minister for Climate Change & Water, Senator Penny Wong.

Doosan SWRO pilot plant starts up
The pilot plant installed at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s Changwon Plant as part of a project to develop core technology for the desalination of seawater went into operation on 10 October 2008.

Aquatech supplies evaporator to Madagascar mine
Aquatech International Corporation announced in December 2008 an order from SNC-Lavalin Inc, Canada, for design, manufacture and supply of a Spray-Film evaporator to concentrate a process stream in a Madagascar mining project containing nickel-sulphate.

IDA to launch Young Leaders Program
The International Desalination Association (IDA) will use its World Congress in Dubai in 2009 to launch a Young Leaders Program for younger industry professionals and students to promote opportunities in the industry, support career advancement, and provide a forum for communication and the exchange of ideas among committee members and the industry at large.
