Dubai demand increase outstrips desalination supply
Statistics released by the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) to coincide with the Wetex 2009 exhibition (29-31 March 2009) show that demand for water rose by 10% last year, to 88,405 million imperial gallons (MIG) (just over 400 million m³).

Ashdod desalination tender launched by Mekorot
Mekorot Development & Enterprises (MD&E), a subsidiary of the Israeli national water company, issued on 1 February 2009 a tender for the design, building, commissioning and supervision on a turnkey basis of the Ashdod seawater desalination plant.

Mekorot looking for Ashdod investors
Private investors are being sought by the Israeli national water company Mekorot to take a 40% stake in the planned 274,000 m³/d Ashdod desalination plant, for which it has just been given full responsibility by the Israeli government.

Tender issued for Israel’s largest desalination plant
The tender has been issued for Israel’s largest ever desalination plant. The 411,000 m³/d plant will be in the Soreq region south of Tel Aviv close to the Mediterranean.

Studies start for Jordan’s first desalination plant
Jordan’s first desalination plant is expected to be operational by 2010, supplying the port city of Aqaba with 10 million m³/year, Aqaba Water Company (AWC) announced in August. The AWC has signed an agreement with Bank Muscat to study siting a plant on Aqaba’s southern coast to desalinate Red Sea water.
