Al Dur desalination financing tied up
Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC) and GDF Suez announced on 26 July 2009 completion of the limited recourse financing of the US$ 2.1 billion Al-Dur Independent Water & Power Producer (IWPP) project , which includes a 218,000 m³/d seawater reverse-osmosis desalination plant as well as a 1,240 MW combined-cycle gas-turbine power plant.

Befesa closes Quindao desalination finance
Spanish contractor Befesa announced on 23 July 2009 that its subsidiary Befesa Water has closed financing for the design, construction and operation over 25 years of a 100,000 m³/d seawater desalination plant in Qingdao, China.

Catalunya’s president opens Barcelona desalination plant
The € 230 million El Prat de Llobregat desalination, which will supply Barcelona with 200,000 m³/d of potable water, was officially opened on 22 July 2009 by the president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, José Montilla, and Environment Minister Elena Espinosa.

UCLA’s mobile desalination test successful
Field trials during April and May 2009 of a small modular membrane-based water supply system by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), have proved that the plant can be used to test brackish water or seawater for use in a full-scale desalination plant.

Flowserve wins three Calder orders in Spain
Flowserve Corporation announced on 9 July 2009 that it had received three orders for Calder energy-recovery devices for seawater reverse-osmosis desalination projects in Spain including the Campo de Dalais project, which will receive the recently upgraded DWEER units.

Biwater finishes first half of Changi performance tests
The first half of the Sembcorp Changi NEWater Plant (SCNP) in Singapore completed performance tests on 14 July, contractor Biwater AEWT told D&WR. No date has been set for plant commissioning, says Biwater.
