US districts fight saline intrusion with reused water
Two California water districts announced an agreement on 18 April 2009 to transfer and use recycled wastewater as a barrier against saline intrusion into groundwater, replacing 5.5 billion gallons (20.8 million m³) of drinking water per year previously used for this purpose.

Marin board takes desalination lead from Australia
“Look at Australia. I don’t want to be stupid,” said Alex Forman, chairman of the Marin Municipal Water District Board of Directors on 11 February 2009 after the board approved continuation of work towards a 5-15 MGD (19,000-57,000 m³/d) desalination plant sourcing San Francisco Bay.

Workshop on membrane water technologies set for March
A workshop on alternative water resources, such as brackish-water desalination and wastewater reuse is being organised in Thessaloniki, Greece on 5 March 2009 by the Center for Research and Technology Hellas and the Berlin Centre of Competence for Water.

Forward-osmosis patent filed by QuantumSphere
Another forward-osmosis process has taken a step forward. QuantumSphere Inc filed for a US patent on 14 January 2009 for its water purification process, which, it claims, serves as a more energy-efficient alternative to desalination methods now commonly used.

San Quentin desalter an option for Marin MWD
A 1 MGD (3,785 m³/d) desalination plant to supply San Quentin prison is one of a number of options being considered by the Marin Municipal Water District, north of San Francisco, USA, which is facing an annual current supply deficit of 3,300 acre-feet (just over 4 million m³).

Decision soon on Coquina Coast desalter study
Consultancy work on the Coquina Coast seawater desalination project by the City of Palm Coast, Florida, USA, which is lead negotiator for the project, is scheduled for approval at a council meeting on 16 December 2008.
