The Palestinian Water Authority has received six tenders, including designs, for a desalination plant in at Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, reports Ma’an News Agency.
The desalination project includes the plant and associated infrastructure, including a distribution network and pumping stations. The total cost of the scheme is reportedly $600 million.
Head of the Palestinian Water Authority, Mazen Ghuneim, told Ma’an: “We are very close, after an agreement with donors, and a series of meetings to find a mechanism to facilitate entry of materials from the Israeli side, so that there are not obstacles to the work of the station.”
The project to bring desalination to Gaza, on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean, has faced significant challenges in financing, and securing appropriate construction materials.
