The WateReuse Research Foundation (WRRF) has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a project to develop a methodology on use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in desalination.
The RFP is for a project named Evaluation of Natural Gas to Reduce Carbon Footprint and Energy Costs for Desalination (WateReuse 13-05).
WRRF says that minimizing the unit cost of power by self-generation of electricity using gas-turbine generation units driven by state-of-the art liquefied natural gas (LNG) is an emerging desalination industry trend. It is therefore seeking a consultant to:
· Develop a methodology for analyzing the feasibility of using LNG for self-generation of power at the desalination plant and/or for the operation of gas-driven engines for large desalination-plant pumps under site-specific situations
· Perform a life-cycle cost-comparison of purchasing electricity directly from the power grid with use of commercially supplied LNG for self-generation of power and/or pumping
· Quantify and compare greenhouse-gas emissions, carbon footprint and total efficiency
· Conduct example evaluations for regions relevant to the desalination industry, eg, USA, Mediterranean basin, Middle East
· Summarize findings and demonstrate how LNG could be implemented at a specific utility/desalination facility
· Take an existing plant and determine the required modifications to implement LNG use.
The deadline for proposals is 15 October 2013.
