Reverse-osmosis treatment removes at least 10 of 32 emerging pollutants surveyed by Lux Research in a report advising investors about technologies to remove substances currently not regulated.
The 32 pollutants surveyed are those that are most likely to face US regulation within the next five years.
Ozone and biological activated carbon filters will also remove at least 10 of the 32 substances, but Lux warns that no currently available or emerging technology provides blanket protection against the suspected pollutants.
The report, Emerging Pollutants: Myth and Reality, counsels investors not to rule out technologies that provide a narrower spectrum of treatment. “Ion- and magnetic ion-exchange, granular activated carbon, UV, ultrafiltration and membrane bioreactors are effective for at least one emerging pollutant”, it says.
“Most water treatment start-ups focused on treating emerging pollutants will fail,” the report warns. “Pollution mitigation technologies able to treat a broader range of pollutants, or that offer an alternative use in the water treatment space offer a more sustainable business model, and are more likely to survive.”
