Tata Power has awarded Aquatech International Corporation an EPC contract for a 25,200 m³/d seawater reverse-osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant for India’s first Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) at Mundra in coastal Gujarat.
The 4,000 MW coal-fired powerplant is owned by Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd (CGPL), a Tata company.
Aquatech said on 2 June 2009 that it will provide a pretreatment system that includes lamella clarifiers followed by two-stage pressure filtration and four streams of SWRO banks, followed by two banks of brackish water RO (BWRO). The contractor will also provide operation and maintenance, and is targeting to produce 12,000 m³/d of treated water by November 2009 and to commission the entire SWRO plant by mid-2010.
Some desalinated water will further be treated through the BWRO system and ion-exchange to make high purity water for boiler makeup.
The CGPL UMPP, awarded on a 20-year BOOT basis, will be India’s first private-sector power project using supercritical boiler technology, and is expected to be the most energy-efficient plant in the country.
