Biwater wins Pt Hueneme desalination contract
Biwater AEWT Inc announced on 30 September 2009 that it had been awarded a contract to design and supply a membrane desalination system for the City of Port Hueneme in California, USA. The new system will deliver a total of 1 MGD (3,785 m³/d) of high-quality drinking-water when completed.

Toray wins giant Magtaa desalination membrane contract
Toray Industries Inc of Japan announced on 29 September 2009 that it had won an order from Hyflux Ltd to supply reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for what will be the world’s largest membrane-based desalination plant, Magtaa in Algeria.

Dutch desalination research backed by American Water
American Water Works Company Inc, the largest investor-owned US water and wastewater utility, announced on 2 October 2009 that it is working in cooperation with Netherlands entities Vitens, RWB Waterservices, University of Twente and WE Consult to launch a project on innovation in desalination technology.

Dow to establish R&D center at KAUST
The newly opened King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia and the Dow Chemical Co announced on 29 September 2009 a plan to establish the Dow Middle East R&D Center at the university’s Research Park & Innovation Cluster.

New US Navy RO units ‘will use 65% less energy’
The United States Office of Naval Research (ONR) is planning to build prototype desalination units that will use 65% less energy and be 40% smaller by weight than current Navy reverse-osmosis (RO) units, an ONR release on 23 September 2009 predicted.

The Australian Water Association has issued a call for papers for a Master Class on Desalination Operations & Maintenance to be held in Sydney on 2-4 February 2010.
