Toray Industries Inc of Japan announced on 29 September 2009 that it had won an order from Hyflux Ltd to supply reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for what will be the world’s largest membrane-based desalination plant, Magtaa in Algeria.
The new plant, which will have a production capacity of 500,000 m³/d, will start operating in 2011. It will be located near Oran, the country’s second-largest city.
Hyflux of Singapore won the contract to design, build and manage operation of the plant for 25 years.
