Reuse highlighted in WSAA urban water roadmap
The volume of water being recycled by the largest water utilities in Australia has increased by 117% since 1999/2000. In addition, it is estimated that, by 2013, 460 million m³/year will be supplied to Australia’s growing cities by desalination plants.

NASA approves space-station wastewater reuse
In a giant leap for wastewater reuse, NASA, the US federal space agency, gave the green light on 20 May 2009 to the Expedition 19 astronauts aboard the International Space Station to drink reused wastewater from the station’s new recycling system.

EDR/MBR well treatment may debut in Utah
A membrane bioreactor (MBR) system, developed and patented in 2008 by Magna Water District (MWD), in the US state of Utah, and Carollo Engineers, could be used for the first time together with an electrodialysis reversal (EDR) facility to remove perchlorate and arsenic from the Barton Well Field in Utah.

Veolia given Sydney wastewater reuse licence
New South Wales premier Nathan Rees announced on 7 May 2009 that Veolia Water has been issued the first licence under the Water Industry Competition Act 2006 to construct, maintain and operate a new recycled water plant at Fairfield, Sydney Australia, as part of the Rosehill Recycling Scheme.

New Qatar lab will look at desalination and energy
A programme to set up the Qatar Sustainable Water & Energy Utilization (QWE) Laboratory was launched on 21 April 2009 at the Texas A&M University at Qatar. It will help Qatar to address pressing water and energy problems including desalination.

US Energy Dept researching wastewater reuse for powerplants
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh in the USA are conducting a project for the US Department of Energy on the use of secondary treated municipal wastewater as makeup water for cooling at thermoelectric power plants.
