Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh in the USA are conducting a project for the US Department of Energy on the use of secondary treated municipal wastewater as makeup water for cooling at thermoelectric power plants.
The Water Environment Research Foundation says that the team is investigating chemical management and additional treatment needed for controlling biofouling, corrosion and scaling to acceptable levels.
US wastewater treatment plants currently sending or considering sending their effluent to power plants for cooling use should contact David Dzombak at Carnegie Mellon ([email protected]) or Radisav Vidic at the University of Pittsburgh ([email protected]) for more information on participation in this research.
