Bay Area reuse expansion fails to pass US Representatives
The Bay Area Regional Water Recycling Program Expansion Act of 2009, which sought to amend the Reclamation Wastewater & Groundwater Study & Facilities Act to expand the Bay Area Regional Water Recycling Program (BARWRP) in California, USA, failed to gain a necessary two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives on 30 September 2009.

Biwater wins Pt Hueneme desalination contract
Biwater AEWT Inc announced on 30 September 2009 that it had been awarded a contract to design and supply a membrane desalination system for the City of Port Hueneme in California, USA. The new system will deliver a total of 1 MGD (3,785 m³/d) of high-quality drinking-water when completed.

Dutch desalination research backed by American Water
American Water Works Company Inc, the largest investor-owned US water and wastewater utility, announced on 2 October 2009 that it is working in cooperation with Netherlands entities Vitens, RWB Waterservices, University of Twente and WE Consult to launch a project on innovation in desalination technology.

New US Navy RO units ‘will use 65% less energy’
The United States Office of Naval Research (ONR) is planning to build prototype desalination units that will use 65% less energy and be 40% smaller by weight than current Navy reverse-osmosis (RO) units, an ONR release on 23 September 2009 predicted.

Decentralized water, wastewater, energy links to be studied
Development and evaluation of advanced decentralized drinking-water and wastewater technologies is the objective of a new grant made by the US Environmental Protection Agency to University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering (UN-LCE)’s Durham School of Architectural Engineering & Construction.
