Bahrain’s Ministry of Finance has appointed Mott MacDonald as technical adviser to the Electricity & Water Authority in Bahrain for the multi-million dollar Al Dur Independent Water & Power Project.
This project is to accommodate increasing demand for both water and electricity, largely driven by the kingdom’s new industrial, commercial, residential and tourism developments.
Mott MacDonald will provide technical advisory services for the implementation phase of the project, which will see the design and build of a combined-cycle gas-turbine powerplant fired by both natural gas and oil. The plant will have a generation export capacity of 1200 MW and a desalination capacity of 48 MIGD (218,000 m³/d) using seawater reverse-osmosis technology.
Al Dur is located on a green field site to the South of EWA’s existing Ad Dur sea water reverse osmosis plant around 25 km South of Manama. The project is due to be in full operation by the summer of 2011. The plot will be developed for three future phases to be built over the next 20 years.
