The government of Kenya has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for Toyota Tsusho Corporation to carry out a feasibility study for a 100,000 m³/d desalination plant in the Mombasa district.
Scheduled to begin in 2017, this will be the first desalination project ever undertaken in Kenya.
On 15 August 2012, Toyota Tsusho became the first Japanese company to sign a comprehensive MoU with Kenya to support the achievement of Kenya’s national vision, “VISION 2030.” The company is pursuing the water supply initiative as one of the VISION projects.
Located 450 km southeast of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, Mombasa is the country’s sole international trading port. Securing stable water sources is an urgent issue for Kenya as it grapples with limited access to safe water supplies due to capacity shortages of power and water purification.
