Doosan lands wastewater package at Iraqi oil refinery

Doosan Hydro Technology has won an order for a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) wastewater treatment package at the US$ 6 billion, 140,000 barrels-a-day Karbala oil refinery under construction at South Karbala, 100km from the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The product water will be reused in the refinery plant. Solid waste will be incinerated while and reverse osmosis brine will be sent to a brine concentrator to complete the ZLD process. The package comprises an American Petroleum Institute oil separator, dissolved air flotation, membrane bio-reactor, activated carbon filters, first, second and third reverse osmosis, softening, thickener, and dehydrators.

The order was issued by SK Engineering and Construction as part of the Korean engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the refinery, a Hyundai Engineering and Construction-led consortium that includes GS Engineering and Construction. 

Construction of the refinery started in February 2014 and is scheduled for completion within 54 months.
