The expansion aims to alleviate water shortages suffered by farmers and smallholders in Valencia, on the east coast of Spain.

Additionally, the ministry reportedly committed additional budget to absorb some of the cost of desalinated water.

The 240,000 m3/d Torreviega facility is the largest desalination plant within Spain’s Plan Agua, and the largest in Europe. The seawater reverse osmosis plant was designed, delivered and is operated and maintained by Acciona Agua.

The plant is reportedly operating at below its full capacity.
