Kenya’s Mombasa County seeks bids for desalination project

Mombasa County, Kenya, is inviting sealed bids and expressions of interest for a contract to manage procurement of a major desalination project.

The contract will cover design, finance, construction, and operation of the plant, and the closing date is 17 February 2017.

Kenya has pursued a policy of developing desalination capacity as an answer to its water challenges. An earlier tender document regarding desalination, published in October 2016, says that water supply in Mombasa County is 48,000 m3/d, while demand is 180,000 m3/d, resulting in a 73 per cent shortfall.

In November 2016, Mombasa County governor Hassan Joho admitted that plans to develop a 100,000 m3/d desalination plant at Shanzu, on Keyna’s north coast, could be scuppered by “astronomical” land prices.
