Turner Designs Hydrocarbon Instruments has won a contract to install its TD-4100 XDC E09 oil-in-water monitor at the US$ 1 billion Carlsbad desalination plant currently under construction in California.
Seawater intake has to be monitored for oil because reverse osmosis desalination as planned at Carlsbad is vulnerable to hydrocarbon contamination.
The Turner device uses ultra violet fluorescence detection technology which is capable of detecting oil at low parts per billion levels.
When completed, Carlsbad will be the western hemisphere’s largest seawater desalination plant producing drinking water at 250 Ml/d for the population of North Country, San Diego.
