Water technology company, Xylem, has won a US$ 1.3 million deal to provide advanced water treatment technology for a water treatment plant in Vietnam’s capital, Ho Chi Minh City.
Xylem will design, install and commission an expansion of one of Saigon Water Corporation’s existing treatment plant, Tan Hiep Water Treatment Plant 2, to include what Xylem has claimed will be Vietnam’s first ozone treatment application.
Xylem’s Leopold Type S Underdrain and Wedeco SMOevo ozone system will be installed. They will, Xylem said, increase the capacity of the plant to produce potable water at 300,000 m³/d for 1.5 million people in Ho Chi Minh City inhabitants – some 15% of the city’s population. Leopold Underdrain technology is already in use at Vietnam’s Thu Duc water treatment plant.
Construction on the Tan Hiep treatment plant 2 upgrade began in the last quarter of 2015 and the plant is scheduled to be operational by April this year.
Ho Chi Minh City currently relies largely on rivers for its public water supply. It takes raw water from the polluted Dong Nai and Sai Gon rivers. According to Vietnam’s Institute for Environment and Resources, both rivers carry discharges from residential areas, hospitals, factories, waterway transport vessels, farms, and garbage dumps.
General manager at Xylem Hong Kong, Patrick Baker, explained, “Xylem’s ozone solution with Effizon evo 2g electrode technology was chosen as a reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable treatment method which will reduce the reliance of the Tan Hiep Water Treatment Plant 2 on chlorine technology.”
Chief executive officer of Saigon Water Corporation, Truong Khac Hoanh, said: “The Tan Hiep plant has a key role to play in ensuring the residents of Ho Chi Minh City have access to a clean water supply. Xylem’s sustainable treatment technologies will enable us to future-proof the water supply.”
