Membrane research at new Irish center in US

Irish wastewater treatment company Bord na Mona is to open a US innovation center, which, as well as promoting the company’s products, will also undertake number of research initiatives in the areas of tertiary membrane treatment and phosphorus/nitrogen reduction.

A particular focus will be on developing new technologies that incorporate recycled or natural materials, reduce the use of chemicals, provide water reuse solutions and reduce energy demand.

The state-of-the-art center will be in Greensboro, North Carolina, the company announced on 17 March 2009 at a reception in Washington, DC, part of an Irish trade mission led by prime minister Brian Cowen. The center will showcase the company’s residential wastewater treatment products, including Puraflo®, which is already widely deployed across the US, along with the company’s new decentralized wastewater and water reuse technologies, and its odor/VOC abatement systems.

In addition, the center will feature product development efforts that include a residential compact membrane, the PuraMc, and a denitrification system, the Pura-DN.
