Land/ship decision in January for Coquina Coast desalination

A decision on whether the Coquina Coast Seawater Desalination Project in Florida, USA, will be land or ship based will be taken in January 2010, a meeting was told on 23 September 2009.

December 2009 will mark the end of the initial phase of the project which is proposing a US$ 1.2 billion plant in Flagler County.

The second phase, testing and preliminary design, will last from 2010 to 2013. Final design and construction should take place from 2014 to 2017.

About 60 local residents attended the meeting with a panel of five consultants.

Partners in the project are: St Johns River Water Management District; Water Authority of Volusia; Flagler, Marion and St. Johns counties; Dunes Community Development District; and the cities of Palm Coast, DeLand, Mount Dora; and the towns of Leesburg, Bunnell and Flagler Beach.
