Media in Azerbaijan and Turkey reported on 9 April 2012 that Iran had begun a US$ 1 billion seawater desalination project in Mazandaran province.
Quoting Iranian TV, the reports ascribed project responsibility to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and said the water would be used to solve drinking-water problems in Qom and Siman provinces.
