German firm constructs solar plants in Kenya

German technology company Boreal Light is to construct 19 solar-powered desalination plants across Kenya, reports energysiren.

The firm has already installed such plants on Pate Island and in the towns of Lumu and Kitengela.

“In 2019, we want to do 19 more projects as impact investment, on top of what we have done so far,” said company co-founder and chief executive Hamed Beheshti.

The technology desalinates, purifies and then remineralises water for drinking. The solar-powered units can produce as much as 2,500 litres an hour. The cost is around KES10 ($0.10) per 20-litre bottle.
