Doosan signs 68,000 m³/d MED desalination contract

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is to build a 68,000 m³/d multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination plant in the Yanbu region of Saudi Arabia.

The Korean company’s president & CEO, Geewon Park, announced on 13 September 2011 that Doosan had signed a contract with Marafiq, Saudi Arabia’s state-run company to execute the Yanbu II seawater desalination project worth US$ 80 million.

Doosan will execute the project on an engineering, procurement and construction basis. The largest unit capacity in the world for an MED plant, it is scheduled for completion in March 2014.

Seokwon Yun, executive vice president of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (head of the Water Business Group) said, “By winning the mid-scale MED project, Doosan has secured its global stature and technological prowess in the MED field as well.”

Doosan secured the latest deal via an international competitive bid, in which it competed against SIDEM of France, Sasakura of Japan, and Aquatech of the US.
