After endless delays, the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) announced on 18 April 2012 that it has finally deferred the Hassyan I independent power project (IPP), which would have had a 450,000 m³/d desalination component, until further notice.
Hassyan was originally planned as a complex of independent power and desalination plants with a total capacity of 9 GW of power and 3.2 million m³/d of water.
DEWA says it reduced wastage in its electricity network in 2011 to 3.49% compared with 6.28% in 2001. It is also developing solar power which will enter service in 2013.
DEWA had invited 18 selected developers to participate in the Hassyan I IPP bidding.
