Desalination doubts, but city supports West Basin plan

The city council of Redondo Beach, California, expressed doubts at its meeting on 21 September 2010 about the 75,000 m³/d desalination plant planned by West Basin Municipal Water District, but nevertheless voted to support West Basin’s Water Reliability 2020 Program, which includes the plant.

West Basin MWD is constructing a desalination demonstration facility, which is co-located at the Los Angeles Conservation Corps’ SEA Lab education center in Redondo Beach as part of its initiative to reduce dependence on unreliable imported water use in the South Bay from 66% to 33% by the year 2020.
