The government of Maharashtra state in India has appointed a committee to study water recycling and desalination in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and to make recommendations.
.The government said in late August 2010 that the committee would be headed by TC Benjamin, principal secretary in the Urban Development Department and would submit a report to the state government within the next three months.
According to press reports in India, the state government is looking to set up three plants, possibly in Mira Bhayander, Vasai and Mumbai, to desalinate 500,000 m³/d of seawater.
The executing agency would probably be the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, although the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, which is already contemplating setting up its own 100,000 m³/d desalination plant, may also be involved.
