Typical energy consumption for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) is now around 2.5 kWh/m . Desalitech's Closed Circuit Desalination, which does away with an energy-recovery device, reports energy consumption for SWRO of 1.65-1.87 kWh/m . Depth Exposed Membrane for Water Extraction (DEMWAX™)

DXV Water Technologies has designed a novel membrane system that uses natural pressure, a very low recovery rate and gravity flow of feedwater past the membrane surface, resulting in an elegant, efficient system. Since the invention of the reverse-osmosis (RO) membrane researchers have tried to harness natural water-pressure, but past attempts mimic onshore processes with their configuration, recovery and flux. This low-flux low-recovery process will require more membrane than traditional systems; however, the elimination of intakes, outfalls, pre-treatment, pressure vessels and piping, energy recovery devices and coastal land will result in a water cost that is below many traditional sources. In addition to substantial energy savings, environmental and economic benefits that the DEMWAX system offers include: Mitigation of 'Brine' Disposal - the extremely low-recovery operation results in 'brine' at approximately 2-3% more concentrated than the surrounding ocean. Mitigation of Impingement and Entrainment - the intake velocity is several orders of magnitude less than typical intakes, virtually eliminating impingement and entrainment. Combining Forward Osmosis with Reverse Osmosis

A combination of forward osmosis with reverse osmosis could facilitate the treatment of some high fouling wastewaters. The system uses brine to draw water from the wastewater without high pressure or turbulence. Key element is the membrane's ability to allow rapid passage of water without much internal concentration polarization. The diluted draw solution can then be desalinated by reverse osmosis. The Two-Way Osmosis or TWO system may also be usable in very remote areas, where seawater ponds can be built for evaporative recovery of salt. Calfornia-based New Logic Research (NLR) announced on 8 February 2012 that it had successfully commissioned a landfill leachate treatment system in Colombia using its vibratory shear enhanced process (VSEP) membrane separation system.

Korea puts $170m into desalination SWRO and water reuse

The Republic of Korea has recently funded a six-year US$ 170 million research initiative in seawater desalination. Over 500 researchers from 16 universities will contribute to the work of the 50-member core team. Government leaders funded the research initiative in part due to the success of South Korean multinational firms in the desalination export sector. However, the South Korean desalination initiative has a humanitarian goal as well, since much of the world's population faces a future of uncertain access to clean water. SeaHERO (Seawater Engineering & Architecture of High Efficiency RO) was launched by the South Korean government in August 2007. The program is coordinated by In S Kim, executive director of the Center for Seawater Desalination Plant located at Gung Ju Institute of Science & Technology. The six-year program has the goal of providing innovation in reverse-osmosis membranes, energy recovery and reducing the cost of engineering, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance. Decentralised RO desalination plants serve Indonesian rural areas

Danish pump/reverse-osmosis company Danfoss launched its small-scale desalination unit, the Watercube 2, in 2009. The mini-plant was built round Danfoss pumping and energy‑recovery technology. The company then spun off this technology into a new company AqSep, which removed the attractive packaging and relaunched the machine as the WM9000E. The new model has a very functional design, was made for very easy maintenance and yet is compact and lightweight. This article describes how the WM9000E has now found favour in Indonesia due to its lower cost in remote areas compared with piped systems. Possibilities for energy optimisation in design and operation of SWRO plants

Seawater desalination with reverse osmosis (SWRO) has taken a noteworthy upturn during recent years. One of the reasons for the success of the membrane process is its lower energy consumption in comparison with thermal desalination processes. The high-pressure RO desalination stage is undoubtedly the dominating energy consumer of an SWRO plant. Energy consumption of SWRO, despite its energy-recovery aspects, is also influenced by a huge number of additional factors. These are both of an external nature (eg, environmental conditions and stipulations), but are also determined by design and configuration of the plant. On the basis of an SWRO plant model, which covers the different pre-treatment and RO configurations and also the design with energy consumption of potabilisation and additional wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering facilities, the specific energy consumption of an SWRO and its subsystems has been determined in this article. Considering the various aspects to be taken into account for optimization of energy consumption in seawater reverse osmosis plants and the fact that in most cases these measures are offset by increases in capital costs for equipment or possibly also in chemical consumption, optimisation of the energy consumption of SWRO plants during planning and operation is a quite extensive and complicated matter and a demanding engineering task.
