The new event's programme is tailored to support mining companies to develop more efficient and sustainable water management practices.

The roll-call of speakers will feature leaders in water management from across the world’s largest mining companies.

“Water management in mining constitutes one of the most critical issues for sustainable operations. It has never been more important and it's an absolute priority to discuss these issues at the Water in Mining 2019 conference,” said Anglo American head of water strategy Dr Hu Fleming.

“The mining community has an obligation to manage water responsibly - in a way that delivers productivity and long-term business resilience, protects water sources for the future and allows enduring social and environmental outcomes. Water in Mining 2019 will show how we and others are working on this,” said BHP Billiton global practice lead for hydrology and water Blair Douglas.

Fleming and Douglas are joined on the speaker roster by water leaders from across the global mining community. The line-up of presenters includes: Barrick Gold vice president of water management John McCartney; Newmont Mining director of environmental affairs, sustainability and external relations Briana Gunn; Goldcorp manager of environment, Brenda O’Brien; Teck Resources director of water Troy Jones; Southern Peru Copper Corp water resources manager Jose de Pierola Canales; and Centerra Gold senior manager of water management Mei Schelp.

“Water is increasingly considered a precious commodity, and the pressure is mounting on mining companies to use it more wisely. Water in Mining 2019 will offer a vital opportunity for the international mining community to meet and discuss best practices and future plans for water management,” said Water in Mining director Stephanie Morley.
