Switchgear fire sparks Barka II desalination plant shutdown
A fire in the low voltage switchgear room at Barka II desalination plant in Oman has caused the facility to shut down.
The plant’s owner, SMN Power Holding, reported the incident to Muscat Securities Market on 30 September 2018.
The fire was safely extinguished by the local authorities, but caused damage to the low voltage breakers that control the plant. Site operations and maintenance staff have begun work to restore operations as soon as possible.
The estimated cost of the incident to the company is OMR 200,000 ($519,560).
Barka II independent power and water project comprises a desalination plant of 120,000 m3/d, and a 678 MW power generation facility, located 50 kilometres northwest of Muscat. It began operations in November 2009.
