Sudan’s Ministry of Finance has committed 72.4 million SGD ($10.9 million) for water projects in the state of Red Sea, including four temporary desalination stations, reports Sudan Vision.
The investment has been linked to Sudan’s Zero Thirst project, a national effort to improve water resource management and sanitation in the North African country.
A contract with Packer Engineering provides for four temporary desalination facilities to supply water to the eastern state of Red Sea, including its capital city Sudan Port, which is on the coast of the Red Sea. The outlook for the longer term is to convey water from the River Nile.
Sudan is suffering from severe water scarcity. In November 2016, politicians from the Sudanese constituencies Blue Nile and Halaib confirmed that people in their areas had died of thirst.
