New desalination journal is private publication

The new peer-reviewed journal, Desalination & Water Treatment: Science and Engineering, is being published privately by Miriam Balaban, secretary-general of the European Desalination Society, and not by EDS as previously reported by D&WR.

The misunderstanding originated because the EDS name and address was being used on the journal’s website and a publicity flier. Miriam Balaban says this will now be amended.

She also asked D&WR to point out that, even though she is editing the new journal, she is remaining as editor of Desalination, published by Elsevier.

“I have launched this new publication to help authors who wish to avoid the wait of up to two years or more to get into Desalination,” she told D&WR. “Now they will have the choice of quicker publication with the new journal.”

Balaban describes her new publication as a philanthropic gamble, though she is looking for financial backing to help keep the publication alive.

A new website www.deswater.com has been created for the journal. The first three volumes have already been published and can be downloaded free of charge. A subscription will be required for subsequent issues, although Balaban hopes to keep this as low as possible.
