LTTD seawater plant ‘to be started in Chennai by July’

A start on a Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant about 30 km off the coast of Chennai is to be made by July, according to a report from India.

The report, in the New Indian Express, says that it follows successful operation of four LTTD plants on Lakshadweep islands, but that this will be the first plant in the ocean. The Ministry of Earth Sciences plans to set up similar plants in other big cities along the coast.

The 10,000 m³/d capacity plant will be able to provide potable water at a nominal rate of around Rs 2 (US$ 0.03) per litre, says the report.
