Global membrane market growth nears 11%

The global membrane separation market is heading to top US$ 39 billion in 2019, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.8% over the period according to a recent report published by market analyst, Persistence Market Research.

Persistence estimated that Europe -  the largest regional market based on 2012 figures – would register a CAGR of 9.6% between 2013 and 2019 to reach US$ 13.8 billion . And the report: Global Market Study on Membrane Separation, said the largest end-user of membrane separation on a 2012 tally - the water & wastewater sector - was set to grow at 11.1% over 2013-19.

“Rising interest in water reuse and wastewater treatment to curb pollution has propelled the overall membrane separation market,” said Persistence.

The researcher said forecast estimates have some 50% of the world’s population without adequate drinking water supplies by 2050 owing to environmental pollution and rise in population.

It said membrane separation processes were currently preferred over others such as flocculation and disinfection on the grounds it uses less chemical agents and is more energy efficient. But lack of funds mean chemical treatments are favoured among developing economies.

It said drinking water quality regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency, and the World Health Organization have boosted demand for membrane separation processes such as nano filtration, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration.
