First Middle East desalination job for Abengoa

Spanish contractor Abengoa has been contracted by ACWA Power International Company to to build a 10 MIGD (45,000 m³/d) desalination plant in Barka, Oman.

The project, recently awarded to ACWA by Oman Power & Water Procurement Co, will supply drinking water to more than 225,000 people.

Abengoa, which acquired Befesa’s desalination business at the start of 2011 and now operates that work under its own name, will be responsible for undertaking the design, engineering, construction and subsequent operation support and maintenance. The contract is worth US$ 55 million.

This is Abengoa’s first desalination contract in the Middle East.
