Elon Musk pays for UV units to purify water in Flint, Michigan schools
Chief executive of Tesla Elon Musk has donated $480,350 to install ultraviolet water filtration units at 12 schools in Flint, Michigan, US.
The donation through the Musk Foundation makes good on a promise made in July 2018, and is a response to ongoing problems with drinking water quality in the city.
The technology is due to be installed by January 2019.
Flint first detected dangerous levels of lead in its drinking water supply in 2014, after the Flint River became main water source for the city, switching from Lake Huron and the Detroit River.
More than 100,000 residents have since relied on bottled and filtered water, as they await replacement of the city’s lead piping, which is expected by 2020.
