Sembcorp Salalah Water and Power Co has shut down its desalination plant in Oman due to rough seas whipped up by Cyclone Mekunu, reports Reuters.
The tropical storm hit southern Yemen and the coast of Oman on 26 May 2018, killing 13 people, and closing operations at Salalah Port.
Sembcorp Salalah Water and Power, which operates Salalah electricity generation and seawater desalination plant, reportedly stated that the shutdown is not expected to have a material impact, adding that the total impact was not yet known.
Cyclone Mekunu is the most powerful ever to hit the region, with winds of 170 to 180 kilometres an hour. In Salalah, Oman’s third-largest city with 200,000 residents, it brought 28 centimetres of rain in a single day, and cut off power and water supplies.
