Carlsbad desalination construction gets going at last

Poseidon Resources announced on 27 December 2012 that it had secured all necessary funding for the Carlsbad Desalination Project and that its engineering, procurement and construction contractor, Kiewit Shea Desalination, had been given the green light to start construction.

Poseidon also said that it anticipated going before the California Coastal Commission to obtain a Coastal Development Permit for the Huntington Beach desalination plant, similar to that obtained for Carlsbad.

Both plants will desalinate seawater using reverse-osmosis and have a capacity of 50 MGD (189,000 m³/d).

Kiewit Shea Desalination is a joint venture of Kiewit Corp and JF Shea Construction Inc. IDE Americas Inc, a subsidiary of IDE Technologies Ltd, will design the seawater process plant for Carlsbad under the direction of Kiewit Shea Desalination.
