Marine UXO Risk Management and Mitigation, ExCeL London (EES)

ExCeL London Phase II is a large redevelopment to extend the ExCeL Conference and Exhibition Centre located at the Royal Victoria Dock in London. During previous work on the original site UXO was encountered highlighting the risk on this site. RPS were subsequently contracted to undertake the UXO risk mitigation works for the Phase II extension.

Marine UXO Risk Management and Mitigation, ExCeL London (EES)

Marine and Land UXO Risk Mitigation approaches were required for this project as Marine piling at the dock edge was to be implemented for the new building which is to extend 35m over the water. With safety paramount, a detailed approach was employed for underwater operations and experienced Explosives Ordnance Disposal trained Divers were deployed to provide UXO clearance ahead of marine piling operations. On the land, the piles were surveyed to bomb penetration depth using specialist intrusive magnetometer survey equipment conducted from a mobile rig platform. This assisted in providing pile position UXO clearance and in locating underground features and historic piles. Over 500 positions were surveyed for UXBs prior to the piling taking place.

Site Supervision was also maintained throughout excavation works by RPS Explosives Safety Engineers who located and identified cannon munitions and ensured that these items were dealt with appropriately. The engineer additionally ensured that UXO safety guidelines were adhered to and all personnel were briefed about the risks during the standard site induction prior to working on site.

RPS has experience in both Marine and Land based UXO surface and subsurface surveys on and off shore; including near shore UXO risks.
