India’s Supreme Court has issued a landmark ruling designed to stop industrial operators from polluting the country’s waterways by requiring that they install primary effluent treatment plants (PETPs).
Shares in Chennia, India-based VA Tech Wabag jumped 4.3 per cent on the news, reported The Economic Times of India.
Chief justice J S Khehar directed all state pollution control boards (PCBs) to issue a notice to operators producing wastewater that they must install PETPs within three months, or have their power supply disconnected.
Additionally, the court required all states to submit reports on the feasibility of building Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs).
Among India’s largest industrial pollutors are coal-fired power stations, drinks distilleries, iron and steel makers, and textiles and pulp and paper factories.
