Nitto Denko and Mitsubishi win Singapore MBR order

Microfiltration (MF) membranes for Singapore's largest membrane bioreactor (MBR) plant at the Jurong Water Reclamation Plant are to be supplied by Nitto Denko/Hydranautics and Mitsubishi Rayon Co.

The order, providing membranes to treat 45,000 m³/d of wastewater, was placed by Hydrochem (S) Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Singapore's Hyflux. The MBR unit is due for completion in the latter part of 2011.

In February 2008, Nitto Denko and Mitsubishi agreed a memorandum of understanding with PUB, Singapore's water agency, to jointly develop membrane-based wastewater-reuse technologies. MBR demonstration units have been running in Singapore since June 2008 and were instrumental in the placing of the order, the companies say.

The order is the Nitto Denko group's first large-scale MBR-related order, and the group sees it as a springboard for further orders using HydraSub MF and reverse-osmosis membranes in the expanding MBR market.
