Ras Laffan desalination plant sold to Qatar water company

The 40 MIGD (180,000 m³/d) Ras Laffan desalination plant in Qatar is to be owned in future by the Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC).

The AES Corporation announced on 26 April 2010 that it had entered into agreements to sell its equity interest in its Qatar business, Ras Laffan, to the QEWC. AES has owned a 55% equity interest in the Ras Laffan project, which also includes a 756 MW combined-cycle gas plant, since 2003.

Ras Laffan has a 25-year power and water purchase agreement with the QEWC, which expires in 2029
