Furukawa and Glater enter AMTA Hall of Fame

Two very popular admissions to the American Membrane Technology's Hall of Fame were announced at the association's 2009 conference and exhibition in Austin, Texas, on 15 July 2009.

David Furukawa, former president and director of the International Desalination Association, and Professor Emeritus Julius "Bud" Glater, who has worked on desalination at the University of California, Los Angeles for around 50 years, both received standing ovations when the awards were announced.

The citation for Furukawa, president of Separation Consultants Inc, said that the award was "in recognition of his many achievements and having been an active leader in several desalination organizations, effectively advancing the membrane industry during a distinguished career of over 40 years.

The achievements of Prof Glater were emphasised back at UCLA a day earlier, when one of his former students, Prof Yoram Cohen, announced the success of the university's development of a mini modular membrane-based desalination tester.

Glater's citation read:
  • Competitive short-distance runner in high school and college;
  • Airforce veteran of WWII in South Pacific;
  • Formally an Air Traffic Controller;
  • Certified Meteorologist;
  • Sheppard water desalting since the '60s at UCLA;
  • Founder of the Water Technology Research Center at UCLA;
  • Recent years at WTRC developing fouling resistant membranes.
