Trials begin at new Oman desalination plant

A new 210 Ml/d desalination plant in Ghubra, Oman has begun trial operations.

”The new Ghubra desalination plant will gradually reduce the problems of shortage of water supply, contribute in raising the water level at the main distribution reservoirs as well as improve water pressure and provide water to Muscat governorate,” said the Public Authority for Electricity and Water chairman, Mohammad Al Mahruqi.

The plant will produce around 50,000 m³ of water during its trial run.

Al Mahruqi made assurances that commercial operation of the Ghubra plant, and the new Barka desalination plant expansion, will begin by the start of 2016. The Ghubra plant will produce 62 Ml/d greatly contributing towards increasing water production for Muscat, South Al Batinah and Dakhiliya Wilayats.

Al Mahruqi said the Quraiyat desalination plant, currently under development, will produce 220 Ml/d. Construction is scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2017.
