Spanish prominent in Al Ghubrah desalination bidders

Spanish companies are involved with five of seven bidders that have been invited by the Oman Tender Board to submit proposals for the Al Ghubrah Independent Water Project (IWP).

The IWP will be based on a 42 million MIGD (191,000 m³/d) capacity seawater reverse-osmosis desalination plant.

Although the original tender deadline was 4 June 2012, the board has extended the date to 9 July 2012 at the request of some bidders who wanted more time to submit their proposals.

The seven companies/consortia selected so far are:

  • Marubeni Corporation, Japan, with Oman Oil Company and National Power & Water, Oman
  • Hyflux, Singapore, with Mitsui of Japan and Al Tahir of Oman
  • Acciona Agua, Spain, with Samsung of South Korea and Sogex of Oman
  • Malakoff International, Malaysia, with Cadagua of Spain and Sumitomo of Japan
  • Tecnidas Reunidas, Spain, with compatriot Aqualia and Orascom Construction of Egypt
  • Grupo Cobra, Spain, with compatriots Inima (now Korean-owned) and Zubair Corporation of Oman
  • Valoriza Agua, Spain, with Septech of Dubai (which built a 5 MIGD (22,700 m³/d) mobile seawater desalination plant at Al Ghubrah), Brookfield Multiplex of Australia and Bahwan Trading of Oman.
