Singapore firm wins large MBR contract in China

United Envirotech Ltd of Singapore announced on 3 November 2009 an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth RMB 264 million (US$ 38.7 million) to build a 100,000 m³/d membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant in Guangzhou, China.

The contract is the group’s largest EPC contract in terms of both value and treatment capacity. It came on the back of other contracts in China, including a RMB 245 million (US$ 35.9 million) build-operate-maintain project in Liaoyang city and a RMB 145 million (US$ 21.2 million ) BOT project in Hegang city, both involving MBR technology.

As the wastewater treatment plant is located in densely populated Guangzhou City, careful consideration given to minimizing its footprint and any disturbance to the neighboring communities. The plant is constructed in 3 levels occupying merely 1.6 ha of land. This is less than 10% of the area occupied by a conventional wastewater treatment plant of the same capacity.

The wastewater treatment plant is to be completed by June 2010 and is one of the projects earmarked to improve the city’s overall environmental performance in preparation for the Asian Games in 2010, which Guangzhou City will host. United Envirotech will operate and maintain the plant for one year.
